Public Matters

2023

Art—a public matter? Since the 1780s, the Belvedere Gardens in Vienna have been open to the public and extensively used as places for recreation and communality. On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the complex, an extensive contemporary sculpture project complements the Baroque statues at the Belvedere’s three locations in summer 2023. With site-specific works by international and local artists, Public Matters follows an expanded concept of sculpture that includes time- and process-oriented approaches. As a critical homage, the show addresses the representation of power in the past and present as well as its transformation over time.
